Frantic Rescue Effort by Australian Police Saves Doll, not Baby

A frantic effort by Australian police last week ended after rescuers, attempting to retrieve a seemingly unconscious baby from a locked vehicle, discovered they had saved an extremely lifelike doll.

The incident followed a similar rescue effort in the United States in which police smashed the window of a new Hummer to rescue a “baby” that turned out to be a doll belonging to the owner’s wife.

Wynette Cernik, creator of the “reborn” baby dolls, knows just how easily they can be mistaken for the real thing. At a cost of up to $1000, the hand-painted dolls with eyelashes, fingernails, milk spots and wispy hair are so lifelike they are constantly fooling people.

She said the dolls are weighted to feel like a baby’s weight, and can even come with umbilical cords, cord clamps and their own birth certificates.
