Israeli Army IDs Bodies of Soldiers in Prisoner Swap with Hezbollah

The Israeli army has confirmed that the two bodies handed over by Hezbollah on Wednesday were those of Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser, the two soldiers whose capture in 2006 launched a month-long war between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.

The Shia Islamist militant group had agreed to turn over the two soldiers in return for the release of five Lebanese prisoners as well as the bodies of nearly 200 soldiers who have died in fighting over the years.

Hezbollah had never confirmed the long suspected belief that Regev and Goldwasser were dead but when they delivered a pair of black coffins at the swap it became clear they had been killed.

Israel not only turned over bodies but also released five prisoners, one of whom was Samir Qantar. Qantar was being held for a deadly guerilla raid in 1979.
