South Africa’s Plans to Legalize Prostitution for World Cup Criticized by Religious Groups

A controversial plan to legalize prostitution in South Africa has been met with derision by religious groups who have called the idea ludicrous and would only make worse the populations’ already high HIV/AIDS epidemic.

The plan would be implemented for the 2010 World Cup hosted by South Africa and its proponents have said the legalization would decrease the risk of rape and provide the workers with a safe environment to conduct their business.

According to the plan the legalization of prostitution would be for the football tournament yet opponents fear the plan could become permanent.

Much of the talk surrounds the city of Durban where the push for legalized prostitution is being pushed. Municipality Deputy Mayor Logie Naidoo has yet to push the agenda saying, “The national government will give us a lead in this matter, whether it relates to the 2010 Soccer World Cup or any other time for that matter.”

Several religious groups and opposition parties have condemned the idea, many suggesting the proposal was “against the word of God.”
