At Least Five Dead in California Canal Crash

At least five people have died and two may still be missing after an SUV and a septic tank collided in central California sending both vehicles into the Delta-Mendota Canal.

The bodies of three men and one woman were pulled from the Ford Explorer they had been traveling in while the body of one man, believed to be the driver, was recovered from the septic truck.

Authorities identified the passengers in the SUV as workers from a nearby orchard in Stanislaus County who had been traveling home to Lodi. Their vehicle was struck by the septic truck around midday and they careened into the swift moving canal running alongside the road.
