First launched in 1987, DragonCon was born from a science fiction and gaming group called the Dragon Alliance of Gamers and Role-Players (DAGR).  The first flyers for the convention were presented in 1986 at the Atlanta Worldcon, ConFederation.

The first guests of honor for the event were Michael Moorcock, Lynn Abbey, Robert Asprin, Robert Adams, Ultima (the creator of Richard “Lord British” Garriott), Gary Gygax (co-creator of the popular RPG game Dungeons & Dragons), and Toastmaster Brad Strickland.  Musical guests included John Serrie, who performed in a NASA flight suit, and Michael Moorcock with the Eric Bloom of the Blue Oyster Cult.  The Atlanta Radio Theater Company also attended the convention and is expected to attend this year as well.

Dragon*Con will be hosted by the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, Atlanta Marriott Marquis, Atlanta Hilton and the Sheraton Atlanta hotel.  The Hyatt is connected to the Marriot across the street by a climate controlled tube.  The hotels are located in downtown Atlanta adjacent to the 1996 Summer Olympics Village.
