Wall Street turning to new class of drugs

Wall Street not immune to drug abuse

The financial crisis seems to be changing the face of Wall Street in some ways that even addiction field experts couldn’t have predicted.

A report recently issued by the drug testing firm Sterling Infosystems, Inc. shows that the once preferred drug of abusers in the financial industry, cocaine, is losing ground to a much less expensive alternative, yet one that is more widely accepted and available: marijuana.

It may come as no surprise that the highest level of drug abuse is among real estate investment trust companies. With foreclosures and new lending regulations at an all time high, stress among the real estate sector is soaring. And, with that that, it comes as no surprise that that particular niche has the highest incident of drug abuse among all groups tested within Wall Street. As a result, real estate investment trust companies are doing more random testing than all of the other investment fields.

“It’s no wonder that drug rehab ny statistics of abuse are steadily on the increase,” remarks a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Professionals, particularly investment bankers show a high incidence of addiction. And the reason is that their profession comes with a level of stress to which most other industries are immune. While the proclivity to addiction seems high within the finance field, the overall prevalence of drug abuse is lower than those within other professions. Only 2% of those tested within the investment industry failed their drug tests last year, compared to 3.6% of the working population in general. Retail workers, however, seem to have the highest incidence of failed drug tests, right at 4.1%”.
