Researchers in Toronto are currently conducting studies on a new way to combat cocaine addiction via drug therapy.
An extract of the plant, the kudzu vine that is native to Asia, has been accepted as a treatment for alcoholism for quite some time. Now, its effectiveness for treating cocaine addiction is being studied.
“This research is quite fascinating,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “Cocaine is a highly addictive drug which causes the levels of dopamine within the brain to soar, increasing the desire for more cocaine. It is reported that the extract of this plant raises the level of a compound within the brain called THP which, in turn, is believed to inhibit the soaring levels of dopamine, thus short-circuiting the addiction cycle. There is still so much to continue learning about addiction; yet there are very few therapies that combat addiction on the physiological level. Obviously, this isn’t a solution that will be available anytime soon; however, the hope that a treatment like this may exist is very encouraging.”
The kudzu vine has been recently exported into the Unites States from Asia for the purpose of controlling soil erosion in the Southeast.
