International Court of Justice Advises U.S. to Halt Executions of Mexican Nationals on Death Row

The International Court of Justice in The Hague has advised the United States to halt the executions of five Mexican nationals who are currently on death row, all in Texas.

In a ruling handed down by the IJC it had been determined the five men had been denied the right to seek help from their consulate following their arrests.

Mexico has also called for a stop to the executions and recently appealed to the IJC to step in. The IJC then asked that all cases be reviewed at which time U.S. President George Bush ordered the state’s courts to do so but that was overruled by the Supreme Court which ruled Bush had no authority to implement that order.

One of the Mexican men on death row, Jose Medellin, is scheduled to die in three weeks.
