Landmine Blast in India Kills at least 17 Policemen

A landmine planted by Maoist rebels detonated while Indian police were traveling through a volatile area in the eastern state of Orissa and the explosion killed at least 17 officers.

According to police the officers had been patrolling through the Malkangiri district in an anti-landmine vehicle when the powerful blast tossed the carrier about 30 feet into the air. Seven officers traveling on motorcycles were able to avoid injury.

It was less than three weeks ago that 38 policemen were killed when Maoist rebels sank a police boat situated on the border of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
