Walking Catfish Shock Florida Residents

Residents of a Pinellas County neighborhood were shocked to find nearly 30 catfish walking around their subdivision Tuesday.

Walking catfish can breathe and travel short distances out of water as long as they stay moist, according to a scientist with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

“Scientists say these walking catfish are pretty tough. They actually live in storm drains, and when it rains a lot they come up with the water and start walking around the streets,” says scientist Paul Shafland. “Walking catfish gained huge notoriety in the 1960s that they were going to take over Florida and devastate the area. Those predictions have not been realized. But while their numbers seemed to have declined the walking catfish are still problematic.”
