Israel Holds Funerals for Two Soldiers Returned from Lebanon

The bodies of Sgt Eldad Regev and Sgt Ehud Goldwasser have been laid to rest in Israel following funeral services for the pair that attracted thousands of mourners.

Regev and Goldwasser were captured by Hezbollah militants following an ambush in 2006 leading to a month long war. Israel had long tried to broker a deal for their release but it wasn’t until recently that the two sides came to an agreement, with the help of German negotiators, for a prisoner swap.

In an agreement with Hezbollah the bodies of Regev and Goldwasser were returned to Israel in exchange for the bodies of nearly 200 fighters and five Lebanese prisoners.

While many Israelis have criticized the brokered deal because it exchanged live prisoners for dead soldiers the government has said it is committed to retrieving all captured soldiers.
