According to the British newspaper The Guardian the United States will reestablish a diplomatic presence in Iran, ending a 30-year absence.
Plans for a U.S. interests section in Tehran are expected to be announced next month, the first step towards setting up a full embassy. The United States had cut off diplomatic ties with Iran during the 1979-81 hostage crisis in which 52 diplomats were captured and held for 444 days.
Despite the report from The Guardian there has been no recognition of the plans by the United States which has taken a hard line stance against Iran’s government and their nuclear program. Iran has insisted their nuclear program was being used for peaceful purposes but many in the international community have doubted those claims.
While the U.S. government has openly criticized Iran’s actions the Bush administration will be sending Undersecretary of State William Burns to Switzerland to observe talks with Iranian nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili this weekend.
White House press secretary Dana Perino told reporters the move to send Burns showed “how serious we are when we say that we want to try to solve this diplomatically.’
The U.S., along with five other countries, has offered an incentives package to Tehran in exchange for their suspension of their nuclear program.
