Remains Confirmed to be Duchess Maria and Prince Alexei of Russia

As the 90 year anniversary of the execution of the last czar family was remembered, Russian investigators were been able to put to rest a long standing myth that that Crown Prince Alexei or Grand Duchess Maria survived.

Yesterday investigators said a DNA analysis confirmed that bone fragments found in Yekaterinburg were those of the Czar Nicholas II’s children.

“The final results of DNA studies, using three genetic testing systems, confirm the hypothesis that the second grave contained the remains of Grand Duchess Maria and Tsarevich Alexei,” the prosecutor’s office said.

The Imperial family was murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918. Their bodies were soaked in acid and burned. The remains of all the family except the prince and grand duchess were found in 1991, sparking the hope that the prince or grand duchess had survived.
