The European Union is expected to implement new sanctions against Zimbabwe on Tuesday in which officials and businessmen associated President Robert Mugabe would face visa bans and financial sanctions.
The EU measure comes after a resolution calling for further sanctions failed to pass the United Nations Security Council.
Mugabe recently won re-election as president, a position he has held since 1980, after Morgan Tsvangirai dropped out of the race due to an extreme rise in violence against his Movement for Democratic Change supporters.
After Mugabe assumed office the African Union called for a power-sharing government to be formed yet Tsvangirai has refused to sign on to such a deal, demanding an end to the political violence and the release of his supporters before he agrees to anything.
Zimbabwe is currently facing EU sanctions that include an arms embargo and visa bans as well as the freezing of assets of several Mugabe associates and the president himself.
The new sanctions would broaden the scope of those targeted.
