A Florida woman who waited more than a month to report the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter has been charged with child neglect and lying to police. Casey Anthony’s daughter Caylee Anthony went missing in early June but her disappearance wasn’t reported until nearly 5 weeks later.
Authorities say Anthony told investigators that she left Caylee with a babysitter at the woman’s apartment in Orlando. Anthony alleged that she had been looking for the woman ever since but had been unable to find her.
The apartment Anthony identified to be the babysitter’s had been vacant for over 4 months, police say, and the alleged babysitter said she didn’t know Anthony. “It’s difficult to sort through what we’ve been told, given that what we’ve been given was false,” said Sheriff’s Sgt. John Allen.
“You left your two-year-old daughter with a person who does not exist at an apartment you cannot identify and you life to your parents about your child’s whereabouts. You cared so little about your child,” said judge John Jordan at a hearing this morning.
Caylee is still missing. Anthony, 22, is being held without bond in an Orange County prison.
A MySpace page has been set up to help find Caylee.
