While the FDA fell short of declaring tomatoes 100 percent safe to eat they did lift their salmonella warning against the fruit, noting the outbreak appeared to be slowing.
The FDA assured consumers that tomatoes from contaminated sources were no longer entering the market. Since the salmonella outbreak began more than 1,200 people in 42 states, Washington D.C., and Canada became sick.
On June 7 the FDA issued their warning about tomatoes and quickly added hot peppers to the list of food potentially carrying salmonella. The FDA did not back off their warning on jalapenos and serranos and have sent inspectors to Mexican packing houses.
