Venezuela’s CITGO Petroleum Corp. to Distribute Energy Efficient Light Bulbs in 11 U.S. Cities

Venezuelan-owned CITGO Petroleum Corp., along with the nonprofit group Citizen’s Energy Corp of Boston, is distributing energy efficient light bulbs in 11 low-income communities in the Untied States.

According to CITGO’s CEO Alejandro Granado, about 460,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs will be handed out to low-income households in cities that already receive discounted heating oil from Venezuela.

The project, which includes workshops on energy conservation, will distribute an average of 20 CFLs to participating households. Inspired by Venezuela’s “Mission Energy” program, the U.S. pilot program has the potential to save participants $15 million and reduce energy consumption by 165 million kilowatt-hours.

Communities where CITGO operates refineries will be participating in the program, including Washington, D.C., Houston, TX, Lamont, IL, Lake Charles, LA and Corpus Christi, TX. Low-income areas of Boston, Philadelphia, New York City, Milwaukee, Madison and Minneapolis will also benefit from the project.

“The CITGO-Venezuela Energy Efficient Lighting Program will save money for recipients who struggle to make ends meet while also helping these communities learn more about energy efficiency and environmental conservation,“ said Granado.
