Dubai Cracks Down on Homosexuality; As Many as 40 Foreigners Detained for Allegedly Being Gay

Persian Gulf tourist hub began a crackdown on openly homosexual individuals this week as news reports Thursday indicated as many as 40 foreign men had been detained for allegedly being gay or openly wearing women’s clothing in public.

The men, who were either visiting or working in Dubai, were caught up in a morality campaign that began last week after a British couple were arrested for having sex on a Dubai beach.

Since then, signs warning against behavior deemed indecent or inappropriate have been posted, watchtowers along beaches have been manned, and undercover police have been patrolling public areas looking for activities that break with the traditional values of this Muslim city-state.
