The U.S. Forest Service has closed two campgrounds near Yellowstone National Park after a camper was attacked by a bear in Gallatin National Forest on Thursday morning.
According to reports, the man had been sleeping in his tent when the bear, though to be a grizzly, attacked him. He suffered bite and claw marks on his arms but managed to escape further harm.
The man was believed to have taken the proper precautions for storing food leaving authorities wondering what caused the aggressive attack.
Following the attack the U.S. Forest Service closed the Soda Butte campground as well as the Chief Joseph campground, both just a few miles from Yellowstone National Park.
The parks will remain closed “"until the bear is located or the immediate concern subsides” according to the USFG.
