South African President Thabo Mbeki and African Union chief Jean Ping are holding talks in hopes of finding a resolution to the continued crisis that has gripped Zimbabwe.
Mbeki and Ping have expressed hope that there could be a power-sharing government installed in the troubled African nation yet there has been little cooperation from either Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe or main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsvangirai has said he would only discuss the issue when the violence has ended while Mugabe has shown little enthusiasm for allowing his bitter rival into his government.
Zimbabwe has dominated African talks ever since the country held the first round of their presidential elections in March. Tsvangirai came out ahead in that vote but it was determined he had not collected a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
During the run-off period violence became a central theme of Mugab’e campaign as members of Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party were targeted by the government military and ZANU-PF party supporters.
Tsvangirai has said more than 120 of his supporters were killed while hundreds of thousands were displaced. With little hope that the elections would be free and fair Tsvangirai opted to drop his bid for the presidency, declaring the safety of his supporters and his family were more important.
International outrage followed as Mugabe once again took the presidency and the country is now facing numerous sanctions targeting not only the Mugabe government but businesses tied to the president.
