50:50 Shot and Earthchild Talk About Music with YourFindit

Austin Benedict of 50:50 Shot based in Atlanta, Georgia and Ian Gilliam of New York band Earthchild talked to Rebecca Firth from YourFindit about their band’s music and their opinion of ska music.  While the two disagreed on the current popularity of the music genre, both hope that ska will continue to grow in the coming years.

Twenty four year old Ian Gilliam is the guitarist for the New York based hip-hip, funk and jazz ensemble Earthchild.  Drawing inspiration from life, Ian believes its time for a revolution and tries to express it through his music.  Inspired by Marvin Gay, Led Zeppelin and The Mars Volta, he places a strong emphasis on musicianship and composition.

Bored with a stagnant rap scene, Ian would welcome a ska revival, although he is doubtful that it will take on a major presence within the music industry.  He thinks the importance of skilled musicians and meaningful music is fading, referring to the rappers who do nothing but talk about the lives they wish they had.

The bassist for Atlanta band 50:50 Shot, Austin Benedict, organized the Masquerade’s first annual Mass Ska Raid in Atlanta, Georgia this year.  His band is listed as a headliner for the show.  When asked about the future of ska, he believes the popularity is growing and a fourth wave ska movement has begun.

So far, ska has seen three major movements within its history.  Beginning with the original form created in Jamaica, some believe as far back as the 1930’s, the genre later evolved into 2 Tone, named after the British record label, and then finally the 3rd wave.  Benedict claims that the fourth wave has begun and that ska music, often referred to now as ska core, has incorporated harder tones and isn’t as peppy as previous artists.
