Australian Humanitarian Considered for Sainthood by Vatican

Australian humanitarian Mary MacKillop may become Australia’s first saint.

MacKillop, who founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in South Australia, became the only Australian ever to be beatified after the Vatican determined she miraculously cured a woman suffering from leukemia.

Verification of a second miracle is needed in order to qualify MacKillop as a saint. The Vatican began looking into evidence in April that MacKillop was involved in curing a terminally ill woman diagnosed with lung cancer. The evaluation process could take up to two years.

In addition to evidence of her miraculous healings, MacKillop’s work caring for children in rural towns across Australia in the late 1800s made her “one of the most outstanding figures in this country’s history,” according to Pope Benedict XVI.

The pope, in Sydney this week for World Youth Day, indicated a final judgment on the humanitarian’s canonization was close.
