Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama arrived in Afghanistan on Saturday as part of his highly touted international tour. This is Obama’s first trip to the war-torn southern Asian nation.
Obama met with American troops as well as local officials and is scheduled to meet with Afghan President Hamid Karzi on Sunday before heading to Iraq. During that meeting Obama is expected to tackle security issues relating to the recent upsurge in violence in Afghanistan.
The Illinois senator has said he would like to see the U.S. concentrate its military efforts in Afghanistan rather than Iraq.
Obama is expected to visit Iraq on his trip but details of that tour have not been released due to security concerns.
The trip is seen as a means of boosting Obama’s foreign policy credentials, one of the main issues his critics have targeted during the presidential election.
Obama will be making stops in Jordan, Israel, Germany, France and Britain.
