German Hostages Freed by Kurdish Rebel Group PKK

Three German climbers who had been taken hostage by the Kurdish rebel group PKK while camping on Mount Ararat in Turkey’s eastern Agri province have been freed.

The climbers were captured on July 9 and the PKK had vowed to hold the Germany until Germany renounced its crackdown on the group. Just a month prior to the hostage taking Germany had banned a Kurdish television station which was acting as a propaganda outlet for the rebels.

Turkey had been pursuing the rebels since the climbers were captured and troops were closing in when they discovered the three hostages resting on a hill, not far from the spot they were taken.

The PKK have long sought independence for Kurds in southeastern Turkey and their struggle has resulted in more than 30,000 deaths since 1984.
