Mexican authorities believe 72 bodies found at a ranch in Tamaulipas state are those of illegal immigrants from Central and South America. Investigators have asked diplomats from El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador and Brazil to help identify the bodies.
The bodies of 58 men and 14 women were found above ground in a structure on a ranch about 14 miles from the town of San Fernando. The Mexican Navy was tipped off about the ranch by a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the neck. He claims he was shot by a criminal gang.
Naval officers exchanged gunfire with suspects at the ranch. One officer and three suspects were killed in the exchange. The Navy also discovered a stash of weapons, bullet proof vests and four trucks made to look like vehicles from the Ministry of National Defense on the ranch. It is unclear if any arrests were made.
Mexican President Felipe Calderon released a statement Wednesday saying he “strongly condemns the acts that caused the death of 72 people believe to be migrants.”
