Zimbabwe Moving Towards Political Agreement

The chaos that has enveloped Zimbabwe’s political scene may be moving towards a clearer picture as both President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai are due to sign an agreement that could end several months of violence.

Mugabe won the June 27 presidential run-off after Tsvangirai pulled out of the race citing a rise in violence against his supporters and the inability to conduct free and fair elections.

Since the first round of elections in March violence has gripped the African nation. South African President Thabo Mbeki has been trying to bring the two sides together but Tsvangirai has refused, declaring he would only sit down when the violence ended,

While Monday’s anticipated signing is not an agreement for a peaceful unity it would be the first step in agreeing to sit down and hold talks such an occurrence.
