Salim Hamdan, Former Driver for Osama Bin Laden, Pleads Not Guilty to Charges in War Crimes Case at Guantanamo Bay

A former driver for al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden has pleaded not guilty to several charges related to terrorism at a war crimes trial scheduled in Guantanamo Bay.

Salim Hamdan is the first facing charges of conspiracy and supporting terrorism and represents the first prisoner to be tried by the United States for war crimes since World War II.

According to prosecutors Hamdan acted as Bin Laden’s bodyguard and ran weapons up until he was captured by U.S. troops at a roadblock in 2001. Hamdan was found to be carrying two surface-to-air missiles at the time he was captured.

The jury will be comprised from a pool of 13 military officers with at least five members needed for the trial. Hamdan’s trial is expected to last about three weeks.
