A Chinese national received 18 months in prison for illegal possession of ivory in Kenya. The unidentified man was arrested Tuesday carrying luggage containing 10 ivory chopsticks and two ivory bangles. He pleaded guilty to charges of possession of wildlife trophies.
A spokesperson for Kenya’s Wildlife Service said it appears the items were intended for person use and not for profit.
The arrest happened a day after authorities found ivory from an estimated 150 elephants and horns from five rhinos packed in crates marked as avocado at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Embakasi. They believe the ivory and horns were collected over a 20 year span and were taken after the animals died of natural causes.
“We suspect these were collected over 20 years; some are pretty old, others are recent, as recent as six months,” said Kenya Wildlife Service director Julius Kipng’etich.
Two suspects were arrested and others are being sought.
