"The Dark Knight"
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger,
Morgan Freeman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart
2 hrs, 42 minutes - PG-13 - Action/Drama
Over a year ago, I scrolled through IMDB and saw that the sequel for "Batman Begins" was expected to be released this summer. The hype hit its apex with the untimely death of Heath Ledger, who played The Joker.
The hysteria for "The Dark Knight" is unparalleled with any movie of recent years...and rightfully so. Following the mark set by "Batman Begins," "The Dark Knight" covers the life of Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) in the dark and gloomy Gotham City.
While "Batman Begins" describes how Wayne becomes the superhero known as Batman, "The Dark Knight" shows how Batman tries harder to become Bruce Wayne.
Unlike the previous Batman movies before "Begins", "The Dark Knight" is more of a drama, detailing the life and times of the Gotham native, accentuating his human strengths and weaknesses. The story becomes more about the man than the hero.
In "The Dark Knight," this hero meets his match in The Joker (Ledger), a purely insane bank robber with a propensity for unbridled chaos. Ledger's portrayal of The Joker was scary as he depicted the diabolical villain to a tee, as if he was born to play him.
In addition, towards the end of the movie, The Joker's once insane tactics became almost noble and very methodical, fighting the system for the system's sake and not his own. Money was not his aim, but to live life unplanned and unbridled, a mindset that makes The Joker an envied character.
The other storyline in the movie was the transformation of Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) from upstanding and cocky District Attorney to the aggressive and angry vigilante known as Two-Face.
At first, Wayne believed in Dent, even as Dent was the final piece in a love triangle that included Wayne's ex-love Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal). Dent allowed Batman to begin his plan to step away from being a superhero.
However, during an unexpected move, Batman saved Dent's life over Dawes, causing Dent to dispise the superhero for letting his fiance' die. As quickly as Wayne made up his mind to believe in Dent, Dent convinced himself that Batman killed Rachel and followed The Joker down the path of criminal-mindedness.
Overall, the movie was all it was cracked up to be. Heath Ledger's performance was impeccable and the switch of focus from making an action film to a drama film about a superhero was superb. Every character played a significant role to the overall theme of the movie, a movie that solidified Batman as one of comics' most intriguing characters and The Joker as one of its finest villains.
The only drawback was that the movie was 2 hours, 42 minutes, something that many people may feel is too long, no matter how entertaining.
