“Butcher of Bosnia,” Radovan Karadzic, Arrested in Belgrade

The “Butcher of Bosnia,” Radovan Karadzic, has been arrested in Belgrade and will now face war crimes charges related to atrocities tied to the Balkans conflict in the 1990s.

Karadzic, the target of a massive manhunt since his last known public appearance in 1996, had been using a false identity as he worked in a medical practice in Belgrade.

The former Bosnian Serb leader has been accused of ordering the massacres inside Sarajevo shortly after Bosnia-Herzegovina's secession from Yugoslavia. Karadzic is also believed to have ordered the murder of more than 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica.

Following Bosnia-Herzegovina’s secession from Yugoslavia Karadzic put forth a campaign of ‘ethnic cleansing” in which Muslims and Croats were targeted for extermination.
