Actress Estelle Getty, best known for her role as Sophia Petrillo in the sitcom "Golden Girls," died on Tuesday, just three days before her 85th birthday.
The apparent cause of death was her advanced lewy body dementia for the past couple of years. Lewy Body Dementia is the second leading cause of degenerative dementia in the elderly. The affliction causes disruption of perception, thinking, and behavior.

Although playing in several movies, her most successful acting role was as Sophia on the "Golden Girls" sitcom, where she co-starred with Beatrice "Bea" Arthur, Rue McClanahan, and Betty White.
Getty received an Emmy in 1988 for her role as Sophia. Her character was so popular that it was brought back for two spin-off shows (Empty Nest and The Golden Palace) during the 1990s.
