Saudi Couple Hammered 23 Nails into Maid

A couple in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is accused of hammering 23 nails into one of their housemaids. The victim has been identified as L.P. Ariyawathie of Sri Lanka. Ariyawathie, 49, began working for the couple in March after the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment registered her as a worker obtaining a position with a recognized job agency.

After Ariyawathie complained of being overworked, the couple held her down and hammered heated nails in to her arms, legs and forehead. She is set to undergo surgery to have the nails removed Friday in Kamburupitiya, which is about 105 miles from the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo.

"We have to remove 23 nails and one needle from her body. Most of the wounds are superficial but five to 10 are somewhat deep. Luckily, none of the organs is affected. Only nerves and blood vessels are affected,” says Dr. Prabath Gajadeera.

Also on Friday, government officials are scheduled to meet with Saudi diplomats to discuss the incident. "It was cruel treatment which should be roundly condemned," L.K. Ruhunuge of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment told CNN.

Ruhunuge added that they are working hard to ensure the couple is punished and Ariyawathie, the mother of 3 children, receives compensation.
