Doctors Successfully Remove Nails From Sri Lankan Maid

Doctors at Kamburupitiya Hospital in Sri Lanka say they successfully removed 13 nails and 5 needles from the arms, legs and forehead of 49-year-old L.P. Ariyawathie, a housemaid who says her employers in Saudi Arabia held her down and hammered the nails in to her body. Six other nails remain in Ariyawathie’s body because removing them would risk damage to her nerves and arteries. Doctors say the remaining nails would not be harmful.

"The surgery is successful and she is recovering now," said Dr Satharasinghe, according to the Associated Press.

Ariyawathie began working for the couple in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in March after the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment registered her as a worker obtaining a position with a recognized job agency. After Ariyawathie complained of being overworked, the couple held her down and hammered heated nails into her body.

Sri Lankan authorities have launched an investigation in to the incident. They are scheduled to meet with Saudi diplomats on Friday.
