Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Accused of Texting Additional Women

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was accused Tuesday of exchanging romantic text messages to other women besides former Chief-of-Staff Christine Beatty.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy and her office has determined that Kilpatrick sent and received text messages with "intimate or romantic content" to several women who were not his wife or Beatty.

The report said that the office located the women, but does not list their names.

Worthy is expected to add new counts of perjury and misconduct-in-office to Kilpatrick's list of felony charges in this publicized scandal. The charges against Beatty were not changed.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were both charged this spring with lying in court to cover up an extra-marital affair between them, and with disciplining two former cops whose investigation would've exposed their affair.

Kilpatrick and Beatty were charged with perjury, misconduct and obstruction of justice due to the scandal. Both deny the charges and face a preliminary examination in September

Both Kilpatrick and Beatty denied under oath having been romantically involved. However, the Free-Press published a list of text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty that contradicted their testimony.

According to the Detroit Free-Press, Kilpatrick said Tuesday he thinks investigation against him is "going to hell quickly". Kilpatrick accused Worthy of playing the race card, as well as carrying out a "personal vendetta" against the mayor.

"She's on the verge of committing some real prosecutorial misconduct," said Kilpatrick in a press conference. "I think that it's only now out of personal motive, there's no justice involved … it's a perversion of the law."

Kilpatrick also said that it is egregious for Worthy to issue warrants and spend a lot of money on his case when Detroit has several unsolved homicide and armed robbery cases.
