Stocks Turn Higher on Upbeat Earnings and Drop in Oil

 

After an uncertain start, stocks are warming to a drop in oil prices and and several upbeat profit reports. Financials are higher as shares of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac gain momentum. Pfizer and AT&T are also lending a helping hand following their respective releases, while Yahoo is higher after reiterating full-year guidance.

 

In late morning trading, the Dow rose 37.12, or 0.32 percent, to 11,639.52 after rising nearly 100 points. On Tuesday, the blue chips gained 135 points.

 

Broader stock indicators also advanced. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 8.47, or 0.66 percent, to 1,285.47 and the technology-laden Nasdaq composite index jumped 26.85, or 1.17 percent, to 2,330.81.

 

Bond prices declined as investors moved some money into equities. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 4.16 percent from 4.10 percent from late Tuesday.

 

A barrel of light, sweet crude fell $1.97 to $126.45 on New York Mercantile Exchange after the government reported that domestic inventories increased last week as consumers cut back on their energy use

 

The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices fell.
