Hurricane Dolly Leaves South Padre Island, On Path to Brownsville, TX

Hurricane Dolly has strengthened to a Class 2 hurricane as it leaves Texas' South Padre Island on a projected path to Brownsville, Texas on Wednesday.

Hurricane Dolly, the second hurricane of 2008 Atlantic storm season, gathered strength over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but has affected the weather throughout the southern United States.

Around 11 a.m., Dolly was 30 miles northeast of Brownsville. The eye of storm was located right above South Padre Island, but has since moved toward Brownsville. The storm was moving at about 7 mph toward shore and could drop 15 inches of rain in southern Texas and northern Mexico over the next couple of days.

Category 2 hurricanes are capable of causing damage to poorly built structures such as mobile homes. State officials will not evacuate unless Hurricane Dolly becomes a Category 3, which has wind speeds of over 111 mph.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from South Padre Island earlier, according to news reports. An apartment complex roof on the island partially collapsed early Wednesday. Power was also out on South Padre Island, while 13,000 people in Cameron County, where Brownsville, TX is located, suffered power loss.
