Syndicated columnist Robert Novak was cited by police after hitting a pedestrian walking in a cross walk in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday. Novak was unaware he hit anyone when a bicyclist who witnessed the accident stopped him and told him.
The cyclist, identified as David Bono, said the pedestrian was crossing the street on a ‘Walk’ signal when Novak’s black Corvette hit him. “The guy is sort of splayed into the windshield,” Bono explains.
The victim, who has not been identified, rolled off the windshield and Novak turned right onto K Street and kept going. “This car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you can’t just hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.
Bono chased Novak down the street and called 911. He finally got the 77-year-old writer to stop. Bono said he told him that he had hit a man and Novak said, “I didn’t see him there.”
“I didn’t know I hit him…I feel terrible. He’s not dead, that’s the main thing,” Novak said.
The victim was treated at Washington University Hospital for minor injuries.
Novak was cited for failing to yield to the right of way.
