Fire at Retirement Home in Russia Leaves 9 Dead

A resident at a retirement home in the Tver region of Russia doused himself with gasoline and lit himself on fire, killing himself and 8 other residents. The man has been identified as 86-year-old World War II veteran Nikolai Dudin.

Authorities say a gas can was found in Dudin’s room. Dudin died of burns while the 8 other victims died of smoke inhalation. Firefighters rescued 480 people from the retirement home, which is located in Vishniy Volochek about 120 miles northwest of Moscow. One person is hospitalized in serious condition. No other details were available.
