Vanity Fair Spoofs New Yorker Cover with John McCain

Vanity Fair released its spoof of the controversial Barack Obama New Yorker cover by adding Sen. John McCain and his wife on Wednesday.

The Vanity Fair cover depicts McCain with a walker, while giving his wife Cindy a "terrorist fist jab" as she cradles several bottles of prescription drugs. The United States Constitution is burning in the fireplace, while a picture of President George W. Bush sits above the mantlepiece.

"We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker's became the “It Girl” of the blogosphere," says an explanatory statement on the Vanity Fair website. "Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we’d like to share it with you."

The New York Daily News posted a similar comic strip by artist Bill Bramhall on July 15. However, it was not stated if the Daily News comic was the inspiration for Vanity Fair's depiction of the McCains.

Last week, The New Yorker had a controversial cover of Obama and his wife Michelle. The New Yorker cover illustrated Obama in Muslim garb and wife Michelle with an Afro carrying an AK-47 in the Oval Office. In the background, an American flag is burning in the fireplace with a picture of Osama bin Laden sitting above the mantlepiece.
