Mexico Fires 3,200 Federal Officers in Corruption Investigation

A 3 month investigation in to Mexico’s federal police led to the firing of 3,200 officers, or about 9 percent of the police force. Federal Police Commissioner Facundo Rosas revealed Monday that the officers were fired for being linked to corruption or for failing to do their job.

The federal police’s internal affairs department began the investigation in May. They have charged 465 of the fired officers with crimes.

None of the fired officers are allowed to obtain jobs on local, state or federal police forces.

Mexico’s fight with drug cartels is often obstructed by corrupt officers. Violence in the country has escalated as drug cartels continue to expand their business of drug and human trafficking.
