MLS, adidas Sign 8-Year Sponsorship Deal Through 2018

Major League Soccer has reached an eight-year sponsorship contract with adidas to extend its current deal and expanding the brand’s reach in American soccer.

The new deal replaces a 10-year, $150 million contract between the two organizations that started with the 2005 season. The new agreement will begin with the 2011 season and continue through 2018 -- when the league will be in its 22nd season.

The deal comes on the heels of additional expansion teams and increased soccer interest in America since this summer’s World Cup, in which adidas was the official apparel sponsor. The new deal, which is rumored to total $200 million, will make significant investments into youth development and reserve programs tied to all 16 -- soon to be 18 starting next season -- MLS franchises.

Adidas has served as one of MLS' partners since the league's inaugural season in 1996. When the current deal started with the 2005 season, Adidas took over as the official athletic sponsor and licensed product supplier for the league. Adidas also purchased advertising rights.
