Leak at French Nuclear Site Contaminates 100 Employees

A leak at a nuclear power plant in southern France Wednesday left 100 employees “slightly contaminated” by a low dose of radiation.

Workers at the huge Tricastin site were evacuated around 9:30 am after they were exposed to radioactive particles escaping from a pipe in a reactor that has been shut down since July 12.

This is the second contamination at the Tricastin site. Two weeks ago, a leak of unenriched uranium contaminated two nearby rivers, forcing a ban on water sports and fishing in the area.

The two incidents at Tricastin have shaken confidence in France’s nuclear energy industry, the largest in Europe. French President Nicholas Sarkozy, who has become an aggressive proponent for nuclear power, brokered deals providing French nuclear technology or nuclear technical advice to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Libya, Egypt, Algeria and Morocco.
