Crews began drilling a shaft Monday to reach 33 miners who have been trapped more than 2,300 feet underground in Chile. Officials say it could take up to four months to complete the shaft.
The men have been trapped in the San Esteban copper and gold mine in the Atacama region of northern Chile since August 5. The miners made contact with rescuers on August 22 by tying a hand-written message to a probe authorities lowered in to the mine. The message was written in Spanish and said, “We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us.
Since then, authorities have concentrated on sending the men supplies and evaluating their physical and mental health. A four-person team from NASA is set to arrive later this week to provide behavioral health support to the miners.
