Zimbabwe Power-Sharing Talks Begin in South Africa, Reps of ZANU-PF and MDC Attend

Representatives of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party and main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change have arrived in South Africa for a scheduled meeting to discuss the possibility of a power-sharing agreement in the troubled African nation.

Ruling President Robert Mugabe and MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai signed an agreement on Monday opening the door for the talks.

Thursday’s talks will involve Public Services Minister Nicholas Goche and Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa of the ZANU-PF party while the MDC will be represented by party Secretary General Tendai Biti and Deputy Treasurer Elton Mangoma.

Both sides have agreed not to discuss the talks with media.

Mugabe and Tsvangirai were involved in a bitter fight during the recent Zimbabwe presidential election. Tsvangirai claimed the first round and declared himself the outright winner yet election officials noted he did not secure a large enough majority to avoid a second round. In that second round Mugabe was declared the winner after Tsvangirai pulled out of the race with less than a week before the vote. Tsvangirai stated the election had not been free and fair and noted violence against his supporters had made it impossible for him to win.
