Mexico Police Capture Drug Cartel Leader Edgar Valdez

Mexican authorities have announced they captured Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who was fighting Hector Leyva for control of the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, on Monday after a shootout. The location of the capture was not revealed. Federal police say “intelligence work” that began in 2009 is what led to Villarreal’s arrest.

Valdez, an American, is known as “Barbie” for his blue eyes and blonde hair. He was once the top lieutenant for Joaquin Guzman, the leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel. Valdez has been wanted by Mexican police since 2002, when he was indicted on two counts of conspiracy with the intent to distribute marijuana. In the United States, Valdez is accused on money laundering and conspiracy to import and distribute cocaine.

Earlier this month the mutilated and decapitated bodies of 4 alleged Valdez supporters were found hanging from a bridge Cuernavaca, in the state of Morelos. A note warning against supporting Valdez was left with the heads of the men.
