The 2010 U.S. Open for tennis got off to an exciting start on Monday. The thirteen 1st round matches were split up among three different courts, with most of the big-name matches taking place on the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens (the main court of the U.S. Open). The women champions at Ashe were Venus Williams, Belgian tennis great Kim Clijsters, and 18-year-old American star Melanie Oudin. Oudin turned in the best women's scores at Ashe with a 6-3 6-0 defeat of 22-year-old Olga Savchuk from Ukraine. Clijsters, who won the U.S. Open women's singles title last year (and in 2002), opened up with a 6-1 set and then went on to defeat Greta Arn after an extended 7-5 second set. Venus, also a 2-time U.S. Open champ (2000 and 2001), defeated Roberta Vinci of Italy 6-4 6-1. On the men's side, the two champions were none other than Roger Federer and Andy Roddick. Federer, who beat Argentinian Brian Dabul 6-1 6-4 6-2, was amazing as usual. He even performed one of his (now trademark) under-the-legs returns to win the second set. Dabul, who simply shrugged his shoulders and raised his eyebrows at the spectacular play, said after the match, "There's nothing you can do when he has those days... He's perfect... Only he can do that." Federer, who first performed that trick shot back in a 2009 U.S. Open semi-finals match against Novak Djokovic, said in a post-match interview, "Again, huh? I thought, 'I think I can do this again.''' And he did. Roddick, who turned 28 on Monday, celebrated his birthday by winning his first round match against Stephane Robert 6-3 6-2 6-2. Roddick was actually under doctor's orders to restrict his physical activity because he was recently diagnosed with having mononucleosis, but he decided to rough it out. It's going the right way,'' Roddick said. ''To be honest, once you decide to
play, I think you throw all the excuses and everything else out the
window. If I decide to play, then it's up to me to give 100 percent of
what I have. So it's not something I really want to discuss too much
from this point forward.'' Day 2 of 1st round matches takes place on Tuesday, with the most watched match surely to be Rafael Nadal against Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia.
