College Football News: Alabama Crimson Tide RB Mark Ingram to Miss Season Opener

Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram will sit out in Alabama’s season opener against San Jose State after undergoing knee surgery Tuesday.

The star Crimson Tide running back underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee early Tuesday morning by prominent surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Ingram, who could become the first two-time Heisman Trophy winner since Archie Griffin, went down during Monday’s practice.

Although head coach Nick Saban has only ruled Ingram out for the first game, it is unlikely that he will be available for the team’s second game of the season, a much-anticipated matchup against Penn State on Sept. 11 in Tuscaloosa.

Sophomore Trent Richardson will move into the starting role after rushing for 751 yards last season as Ingram's backup.

Ingram, who became Alabama's first Heisman Trophy winner last season, rushed for 1,658 yards and scored 20 touchdowns.
