Iraq Banned from Beijing Olympics, Political Influence Cited

The International Olympic Committee has officially banned Iraq from the 2008 Beijing Olympics citing the government’s decision to replace its Olympic committee with its own appointees as reason for the decision.

Iraq’s decision to appoint members to the Olympic committee violated the IOC charter which states all committees must be free of political influence.

Iraq will not be able to appeal the decision which now means the seven athletes scheduled to represent the country will not be able to participate in Beijing next month.

In 2004 Iraq had an Olympic committee which met the guidelines of the IOC but those members were replaced after the government claimed the members were corrupt.

Iraq was to be represented by two rowers, two sprinters, an archer, weightlifter and a judo competitor.
