Prominent Boston criminal defense lawyer Richard Egbert died Thursday while vacationing with his family in upstate New York. The 61-year-old collapsed of an apparent heart attack, said his wife Shannon McAuliffe.
“He was the best in everything he did. Being a lawyer was a small part of it. He was a great husband, a great father and a great friend. As good as he was as a lawyer, he was just an extraordinary person. A huge, huge man,” McAuliffe said. “He was healthy as could be. We don’t have a cause of death yet, but I believe it was a heart attack.”
Egbert was known for defending mob figures and powerbrokers as well as political figures accused of corruption. He was named the president of the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 1999.
