The United States expanded its sanctions against Zimbabwe on Friday after President George Bush signed an executive order aimed specifically at those individuals and businesses who sustain close ties to President Robert Mugabe.
Following the signature of the order the White House released a statement declaring, “This action is a direct result of the Mugabe regime's continued politically motivated violence, disregarding calls from the Southern African Development Community, the African Union and the United Nations to halt the attacks.”
The United States has been lobbying for more sanctions against Mugabe and his political allies since Zimbabwe’s presidential election in June. Mugabe’s presidency has been called “illegitimate” by Bush and that feeling has been held by several other world leaders.
Despite the U.S., France and Britain supporting international sanctions against the Mugabe regime the U.N. Security Council failed to pass a measure after China and Russia objected.
The new sanctions enacted by the United States are targeted and are not going to affect the flow of humanitarian aid for Zimbabwe.
Mugabe won a presidential election that was marred by political violence, the majority of which was inflicted upon supporters of Morgan Tsvangirai and his Movement for Democratic Change party. Tsvangirai had won the first round of the presidential election in March but election officials declared he did not receive a large enough majority to avoid a run-off.
With less than a week before the second round was to commence Tsvangirai dropped out of the race due to the increased violence.
